The Crimson Rosella is a beautiful Australian native parrot. The Crimson Rosella, Platycercus elegans, is a parrot native to eastern and south eastern Australia which has been introduced to New Zealand and Norfolk Island. It is commonly found in, but not restricted to, mountain forests and gardens. Platycercus elegans is a medium-sized Australian parrot at 36 cm long, much of which is tail. There are five subspecies, three of which are actually crimson.
The brightly coloured Crimson Rosella is a common sight in southern Australian forests.
It feeds on nuts and seeds in the canopy and on the forest floor.
While feeding in the tops of trees, the Crimson Rosella's bell-like call can be heard, which contrasts with its more typical parrot-like calls when flying.
Young Crimson Rosellas are mostly green with patches of red, and are sometimes mistaken for a separate species.
